Bad Names And Creative Destruction

April 9, 2010

iPad Takes a Lickin’ and Keeps on  Sellin’

Last Friday we wrote about the importance of words, terms and names. This week the Apple iPad was delivered unto the welcoming arms of Apple devotees. The product has been well received by reviewers and early users. iPads are selling like iPancakes and even in this regrettable recession, sales have outstripped forecasts, adding more dollars to Apple’s already overstuffed treasure chest. Kinks sang it best – Give the people what they want! Way to go Steve & iTeam! And who would have ever pegged Jobs as the King of Cash?

But, not everyone is treating the iPad kindly. Like a star-crossed lover, the iPad is desired then destroyed. First the name was ridiculed and then to add injury to insult the machine has been subjected to extreme abuse by people looking for attention on YouTube.  Bread and circuses for the tech masses? Save the Christians – feed iPads to the lions! Snack on your Friday Funny Finger Food Features:

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose…

Woman’s Day just ran an article featuring the iPad and other poorly named products.

10 Worst Product Names Ever

When it was first announced earlier this year, the world went crazy over the thought of having a device with almost all the features of a laptop, iPhone and eReader in one. The features may be all well and good, but the name makes us think of…well, you know what feminine product. Photo by Getty Images.

Take a look at some of the world’s worst-titled merchandise, By Olivia Putnal. “We can only imagine the time and money that goes into creating a successful product line and, more important, its catchy name. There are many items that succeed in doing both, but some, not so much. The launch of the iPad—and the digs that ensued—got WD thinking about the worst names out there. From Pee Cola to Krack Nuggets, try to wrap your head around these off-the-wall labels” Read the article…

CNET TV’s Tom Merritt also has his pick of the worst 5 tech product names, guess where iPad ranks…

Mad TV Puts on the iPad

This skit was broadcast way back in 2007.

Fame Whores, Neo-Ludites or Marketing Mavens?

Some people are not satisfied with simply ridiculing the latest star in Apple’s i. They feel compelled to destroy it for fun and profit.

Brand new iPad getting smashed by a baseball bat

I’m not sure why a few Pittsburgh nimrods beat the stuffing out of a brand new (and very resilient) iPad – Anarchy perhaps. Or how they came up with the $500 to get one at a Best Buy, but they have amused and/or aghast >1.4 million viewers with their antics, care to look…

Creative Destruction Drives & Wets Eyes

Now this guy I get. Tom Dickson, founder of Blendtec has been doing viciously viral videos (Total Upload Views:106,355,666) since October 2006. His Letterman like stupid tricks have driven millions of people to his company’s web site and has help sell lots O’ blenders. Dickson spending 500 bucks to drive >4.4 million visitors to his site in less than a week is a very good advertising buy. It will certainly beat his current #1 video of >8 million views of him blending an iPod.

Tom, an apparently pleasant fellow, even likes his Apple products, but lets face it – “i”s is eyes. Companies, like Nike, now send him products begging him to tear ’em up. It’s hard to argue with that kind of success. Even Ms. Piggy promised to send Kermit for a spin – “What’s green and red and goes like this (dance like an iPod girl)…” Or maybe Simon Cowell in a blender, see Joe’s Cartoon…

Have a splendid weekend Juliet!
